Case Study: Large-Scale Earthworks in Barnsley for KDA Expansion
The site before transformation: A challenging wasteland area requiring extensive clearance and earthworks in Barnsley
Introduction
Utley Excavations Ltd. was recently commissioned for significant earthworks in Barnsley. The Project aimed at transforming a substantial area of previously unuseable land into a highly functional storage yard and car park. This case study outlines the challenges faced and the comprehensive solutions implemented to deliver a successful outcome for our client.
The Challenge
Our client approached Utley Excavations with a requirement to develop a 6610m² area in Barnsley. This site, previously an unusable wasteland, needed to be converted into a new storage yard and an accompanying car park. The primary challenge was to execute large-scale earthworks to create a level, stable, and accessible surface capable of supporting heavy traffic, including forklifts and other vehicles, while also addressing significant waste removal and drainage requirements.
The Solution - Phase One: Storage Yard Transformation
Phase one of the project focused on the transformation of a 3760m² wasteland area into a new, functional storage yard. This involved extensive site clearance and earthworks to prepare the ground for its intended use to be used as storage and light traffic such as loading vehicles and folk trucks.
Our fleet of heavy plant machinery working together: 13-tonne 360 excavator, 6-tonne excavator, and 9-tonne dumper
Earthworks and Site Clearance
The initial stage required a large-scale site clearance to remove existing debris and vegetation. Our experienced team deployed a range of heavy plant machinery to efficiently execute the earthworks:
- 6-tonne excavator: Utilised for precision digging and material handling.
- 13-tonne excavator: Employed for bulk excavation and larger-scale earth moving.
- 9-tonne dumper: Used for efficient transportation of excavated materials across the site.
The entire ~3760m² area was meticulously scraped, levelled, and compacted using our roller to ensure a stable and durable base for the new surfacing. This rigorous compaction process is crucial for preventing subsidence and ensuring the longevity of the new yard.
Waste Management and Recycling
A significant aspect of this phase was the management and recycling of over 1000 tonnes of excavated material. This included a diverse mix of soil, wood, stone, and general waste. Utley Excavations is committed to sustainable practices, and all suitable materials were removed from the site for recycling, minimising environmental impact and reducing landfill reliance.
Drainage Solutions
Given the large, flat area designated for the storage yard, effective drainage was paramount to prevent water accumulation and ensure year-round usability. We opted for a French drain system to manage surface water runoff. This solution involves a trench filled with gravel and a perforated pipe, designed to efficiently direct water away from the surface, preventing pooling and potential operational issues for the client's forklifts and vehicles.
The Solution - Phase Two: Car Park Development
Following the successful completion of the storage yard, phase two involved the development of the car park. While specific details for this phase were not provided, it would typically involve similar earthworks, levelling, and compaction processes, tailored to car park specifications. Drainage solutions, such as additional French drains, would also be implemented to ensure effective water management for light traffic use.
The finished result: A professional, level, and fully functional storage yard and car park with concrete retention blocks
Outcome
Utley Excavations successfully transformed a previously unusable wasteland into a highly functional and accessible storage yard and car park. The client now benefits from a robust, well-drained, and easily navigable area, significantly increasing their operational capacity and efficiency.
